Competitions usually start mid morning and end mid afternoon depending on how many targets and the format of the competition. Archers are divided into groups of 3 to 5 (4 being the preferred number) and move from target to target, shooting and recording their scores. The sport is very social as there is lots of time to chat and exchange stories and dispense wisdom.
There are separate categories for different classes of bows, ages and sexes. Although each archer competes against the rest of the field he/she also always competes against themselves. 3D archery is an excellent place to hone your shooting skills for the hunt but is also a wonderful family sport with whole families competing on a day. The little guys gain confidence and a little time away from computer games, tv's and Playstations.
So although most hunters prefer this discipline of target archery (mainly because it is a bit of practice for the hunts) most participants are not hunters and simply like the sport of archery in a pleasant nature setting. 3D events have in fact become quite an attraction in the archery community and we regularly attract archers as far afield as Plettenberg bay. We have on occasion had visitors competing from just about everywhere in South Africa and even from international visitors.
