Archery Open Day: Saturday 8th October, 2011

open day
The archery open day was held in Port Elizabeth on the 8th of October 2011. The aim of the open day was to introduce the public to Archery and what all could be done with bows.
We set up on the Mashee golf course in Kragga Kamma road where Ross the owner allowed us to take over the golf course for the day. We setup following events on the course.

Bow Golf

BowGolf
The bow golf range was three holes and worked on the following format. The course was shot with traditional bows only. The arrows used where Flu Flu's (these are special arrows with feathers put on in a way that slows the arrow down. This only allows the arrow to travel a short distance). The aim is to get your arrow to the green in as little shots as possible. Once on the green the archery will shoot at a target placed next to the green. This target is marked with bull been -3 then a ring with -2 and another ring -1. Anything out this ring was a zero. Great fun was had on this event and most shot more than one round. We will be hosting a full round shortly.

3D Range

The 3D range was set up with animals placed in pairs. The archer shot from a marked circle at the two animals and then moved onto the next pair. This was also well supported.

Compound Range

The compound range was setup with three targets. The distances were marked out in 10 meter intervals. Here we were able to demonstrate the difference between the compound bows and traditional bows.

Kids Range

Kids range
Thanks to Wendy Steele from Zingela archery for hosting the kids shooting area. Here the kids could shoot traditional bows at various targets. The highlight for the kids was the balloons. Shooting at the balloons really was great fun for the youngsters.

Flu Flu

Fluflu
The Flu Flu shoot comprised of a group of people shooting their traditional bows with arrows fitted with flu flu's. A person threw a round disk into the air and then all the archers tried to shoot the disc out the air. This also proved to be a huge success and was also enjoyed by all. The whole day was controlled by our safety officer Dirk (Chainman) All marshal's wore bright red bibs and were present during all the events. So safety was well controlled.

Stalls

Stalls
Three stalls were also setup for the public to view. They were East Cape Bow hunting Association, Kuduspoort Safaris and Zingela. Here the public could get information the club, Bowhunting farm and bow shop.

After the event all the people could buy delicious spit Warthog meat on Rooster Brood rolls. This was done by Ian Hayward, Matt Calitz and Robert Ferguson.
The day was finished off with us all sitting on the deck and discussing the day and archery with friends and potential new archers.

Thanks again to the committee for a great day and putting archery to the public.
